T in the Park: Scotland's main festival

Ask any band what their favourite festival other then Glasto is, and chances are they'll say it's Scotland's multi award winning T In The Park. T In The Park is famous for its 'all inclusive' atmosphere, and it's adored by the performers, the organisers, and the loyal legion of supporters it draws in each year from all over the globe.

What is it and where did it come from?

Now a time-served fixture on the UK festival calendar, T In The Park music festival plays host to almost 200 bands spread over 11 stages. Initially held at the Strathclyde Country Park between Hamilton and Motherwell in 1994, the festival moved to its current home at Balado near Perth in 1997, and has since featured performances from acts as diverse as James Brown, Snoop Dogg, REM, Green Day, The Who, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Amy Winehouse to mention but a few. The festival takes its name from its main sponsor - Tennents Brewery - and uses the company's logo in its own branding.

For anyone who hasn't been to a Scottish festival yet, T In The Park sums up perfectly what festivals north of the border all about: out-and-out fun, an overwhelmingly friendly atmosphere, and great music.  The massive appeal of T In The Park draws revellers from across Europe, and it's also famous for being a favourite with bands from across the Atlantic, with acts such as The Killers coming back year after year.

Who can I see at T In The Park 2010?

As ever, T In The Park has an incredibly strong lineup this year, and once again it benefits from the pulling power of sharing the same dates as Oxegen festival over in Ireland, with many acts performing at both festivals over the course of the weekend. Highlights of T In The Park 2010 include: Muse, Eminem, Kasabian, Jay-Z, the Black Eyed Peas, Jamie T and the Courteeners. For dance fans, Carl Cox, Plastikman and Slam will be mashing it up in the Slam Tent, with 3OH!3 covering the pop base. The Futures tent is brimming talent hot off the Radar pages of the NME, all hoping to emulate the success of bands such as Duels and The Cribs, who leapt up to bigger stages after earning their stripes down in the big top at the bottom of the field.

What else do I need to know about T In The Park?

T In The Park draws in over 80,000 people over the course of the weekend, with just over 60,000 campers creating a temporary town in the fields to the east of the site. Camping is split into 7 colour-coded areas, with a separate site for disabled partygoers. The fiercely Scottish ethos of the festival is carried through to a grass roots level with two separate stages - the Ceildh Tent and the T Break Stage - playing host to home-grown talent. Surrounded by some of the most stunning countryside in Britain, T In The Park takes its environmental responsibilities seriously, and in 2006 became the largest festival in the world to completely offset its carbon footprint. The festival's stunning location gives the local community beyond the fenceline a real boost in the weeks surrounding the event, with many revellers incorporating the festival into holidays in the region.
